Director of Development

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Publisher and working closely with the Editor and company leadership, the Director of Development is responsible for designing and executing a sustainable, mission-aligned fundraising strategy for our client. 
 
They develop and execute the fundraising strategy, securing and growing philanthropic partnerships, ensuring strong donor relations, implementing engagement initiatives, and soliciting and stewarding philanthropic gifts of all sizes to benefit the local and national programs and objectives of our client. 
 
 
Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead our client’s overall fundraising strategy, for both restricted and unrestricted gifts for individual and institutional donors, including all solicitations, acknowledgements, recognition, events, and delivery of benefits.
  • Work with the company leadership, build programs, community campaigns, grant opportunities, and philanthropic partnerships. 
  • Oversee and implement a comprehensive donor management system for donors and prospects, including oversight of moves management and portfolio management; create and implement specialized stewardship plans for major donors and special gifts.
 
Donor Engagement and Solicitation
 
  • Proactively identify and engage potential donors — including individuals, foundations, and institutional partners — by clearly articulating our client’s mission and funding needs, with an emphasis on securing support for impactful journalism and community-focused initiatives.
  • Lead fundraising and engagement efforts for our client’s, ensuring its continued growth and stewardship.
  • Implement or manage all solicitations, including annual appeals, major gift asks, grants and donor presentations.
  • Cultivate and sustain committed relationships with a prioritized portfolio of donors and prospects; identify, cultivate and secure support from new individuals, corporate, and foundation prospects.
  • Work collaboratively across the organization, partnering with newsroom leadership to translate coverage priorities into fundable proposals and engage donors and report on the impact of restricted gifts.
  • Ensure appropriate stewardship plans are in place for major donors and special gifts and successfully execute those plans.
 
Management and Administration
  • Develop and manage the fundraising expense budget.
  • Develop and oversee standards, procedures and tools that enable best practices in acknowledgement, recognition, and reporting for annual and endowment fundraising.
 
Organizational & Program Collaboration
  • Serve as a key member and collaborate regularly with internal departments, consultants, partners and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across the organization to identify key programs and projects for funding.
  • Represent our client in convenings, meetings, and forums for the benefit of local news and fundraising as an industry practice.
  • Provide and promote a positive institutional culture featuring teamwork, accountability, resourcefulness and a commitment to excellence; engage team members in development and advancement. 
 
Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in fundraising, development, or nonprofit management (journalism or public media preferred).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a persuasive, donor-centered approach.
  • Familiarity with Alaska’s philanthropic landscape and/or a demonstrated ability to navigate regional and national fundraising environments.
  • Entrepreneurial and strategic thinker with a passion for local journalism
