New Staff Engineers Join R&M

Gabe Benitez, EIT and Long Nguyen, EIT, CESCL recently joined R&M CONSULTANTS, INC. (R&M) as Staff Engineers. Gabe joins R&M’s Water Resources Group and will be based in the firm’s Wasilla office, where he will support hydrology, hydraulics and drainage design projects. Long joins the firm’s Construction Services Department, where he will support construction administration and inspection for transportation and infrastructure projects throughout Alaska.

Gabe brings six years of engineering and natural resources experience, with a background in water resources, hydrology, hydraulics, drainage design and soil science. His engineering experience includes flood frequency and stormwater analysis, hydraulic modeling, culvert design and streambank protection. Gabe also has extensive field experience in soil and vegetation mapping, wetland delineation and geospatial analysis throughout Alaska. His technical experience includes HEC-RAS, HY-8, Civil 3D and GIS.

“I wanted to work at R&M because my interest in remote sensing and geospatial technology has grown significantly over the years,” said Gabe. “I’m particularly interested in how bathymetry, LIDAR and survey data can be used to develop better three-dimensional models for water resources projects. R&M gives me the opportunity to explore those interests while continuing to learn beyond the water resources field, help others along the way and build relationships across the firm.”

Gabe has a M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Utah State University and a B.S. in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management from the University of Minnesota. He is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Outside of work, Gabe enjoys climbing, snowmachining, hiking, camping, fishing and traveling. He is also working on his video editing skills and has a YouTube channel where he shares what he’s up to.

Long brings more than 20 years of construction engineering, inspection and administration experience on transportation infrastructure projects throughout Alaska. He has worked on highway reconstruction and rehabilitation, bridges, drainage improvements, traffic control, pedestrian facilities and pavement preservation projects with construction values of up to $80 million. Long’s experience includes serving as Project Engineer on the $80 million Seward Highway MP 17-22.5 Rehabilitation project, which included highway reconstruction, bridge replacement, railroad culverts, rock blasting and paving.

“I wanted to join R&M for the opportunity to continue growing and developing my skills as an engineer while working on a wider variety of horizontal and vertical construction projects,” said Long. “I hope to continue working on major roadway projects, expand my experience in vertical construction and contribute to the success of R&M’s project teams.”

Long has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Alaska Anchorage. He is, an Alaska Certified Erosion & Sediment Control Lead and a certified Traffic Control Supervisor. Outside of work, Long enjoys fishing and camping with his family, cooking and traveling.
