Virtual Workshop-Comprehensive Safety Action Plan
The Mat-Su Borough is developing a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan for an expanded boundary of the core area (see image below) that is funded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant program. This plan will ensure that the Mat-Su Borough is eligible to apply for future SS4A grant funding to implement projects, develop additional planning studies, and fund demonstration projects. The Mat-Su Borough contracted Michael Baker International to develop the plan.
How can you participate?
We want to hear from you! We are contacting you because you work with an organization that can provide us with valuable feedback about how to reduce serious injuries and deaths on our roads. Community input regarding specific transportation safety challenges is vital to the success of this plan. Here’s how you can be involved:
1. Attend an upcoming public workshop.
Over the course of plan development, we will facilitate two virtual public workshops and three open houses (one each in Palmer, Wasilla, and Houston). See details below:
§ Virtual Public Workshop #1: Wednesday, July 10, 2024 (11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) Meeting ID: 864 7200 9983
Passcode: 657859
§ Virtual Public Workshop #2: Winter 2024 (TBD)
§ In Person Open House (Palmer/Wasilla/Houston): Winter 2024 (TBD)
2. Take the community safety survey.
We have launched a survey to capture your specific safety concerns for the Mat-Su Borough expanded core area. Help us reach our goal of 500+ responses! Go online to take the survey now!
3. Explore the project website.

What is Safe Streets for All?
SS4A is a federal grant program that provides funding to local governments to prevent deaths and serious injuries on roads. The Mat-Su Borough was a recipient of one of these grants and is using it to complete a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan for the expanded core area.
We will use the Safe System Approach to develop this plan. This approach includes building multiple layers of protection to help prevent crashes and minimize the severity of injuries when crashes do happen.
When complete, the Mat-Su Borough Comprehensive Safety Action Plan will include:
A long-term strategy for improving transportation safety.
· A focus on all road users including those who drive, walk, bike, ride, roll, have a disability, and operate commercial vehicles.
· An analysis of risk factors for serious crashes
· Tools to prevent future crashes.
· Projects, priorities, partners, and potential funding opportunities to improve safety.
