Valley Charities is excited to announce the 2023 Kids Backyard Birding Challenge. turn-A-Leaf Thrift Store and Alaska WildBird Rehabilitation Center are joining together to encourage kids (and parents) to get outside to learn more about the backyard birds that visit frequently.
WE ARE HAVING TWO WINNERS THIS YEAR!
Each participant will receive when they sign up: The Backyard Birding Journal with the birds to find, Explorer Birding Journal, vest, plastic birding hat, small canvas bag, and a pair of pretend binoculars. Kids can pick up our free Backyard Birding Challenge checklist at the turn-A-leaf Thrift Store register area. The Birding Journal checklist provides 12 birds that are known in the Mat-Su Valley that are consistent visitors to Alaska. To qualify, kids will need to find at least 7 of the 12 birds in the journal. When kids sign up for the challenge at the turn-A-leaf Thrift Store they will be given a bag that has the birding journal, kids' binoculars (8X View), an explorer vest and hat, and a small canvas bag.
Alaska WildBird Rehabilitation Center is providing an informational card that gives solutions to keep pet cats and wild birds healthy and safe and a bird window static cling with the Alaska WildBird Rehabilitation Center Logo. They are also giving away a center tour for the first two you that complete the challenge.
The first ten to sign up receive a wooden bird call, and the second ten to sign up will receive a hummingbird ring feeder.
THE FIRST PERSON TO COMPLETE THEIR BACKYARD BIRDING CHALLENGE

THE SECOND PERSON TO COMPLETE THEIR BACKYARD BIRDING CHALLENGE

Once participants have completed their search of identifying the birds on the list, they need to turn in their completed journal to turn-A-leaf thrift store to receive a Backyard Birding Challenge Button and Certificate of Achievement. To wrap up the event we will have a celebration at Alaska WildBird Rehabilitation Center on September 9, ask your parents to join you for 12-3 pm to learn more about birding, meet Rhett the red-tailed hawk and participate in games and bird related activities.
Parents can even take it a step a further and teach their kids more about each species from google searches on the internet to learn fun facts like an American Robin can fly 20 to 35 miles per hour.
Please make sure your name and phone number can be easily read to ensure the certificate is spelled correctly. (Limit 1 per child)
