State 6-1 Dedication in Honor of Benny Cottle
The Mat-Su Borough Assembly passed Ordinance 23-037 in May 2023 in recognition of the service, devotion, and accomplishments of Benjamin (Benny) R. Cottle and will dedicate Station 6-1 in his honor by naming this station the Benny Cottle Public Safety Building. Benny was one of the original people who started the Wasilla Volunteer Fire Department and was the longest-serving member from 1960 to 2022. Benny provided the land that Station 6-5 and Cottonwood Creek Elementary School sit on today, and he helped to secure the first new fire apparatus for the city of Wasilla. Benny was instrumental in creating the Wasilla Fire Department, Ambulance, and the Central Mat-Su Fire Department. Benny was involved in the hiring of the first full-time fire Chief and during his over 60 years of service, Benny held every position in the fire department at one point. The dedication next week will honor his many years of service, and all are invited to attend on Wednesday, October 4 at 6 p.m. at Station 6-1, 101 W. Swanson Ave. Wasilla.
